Several affiliate unions followed the joint directive from the Nigeria Labour Unions Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to start an indefinite nationwide strike at midnight on June 3, 2024.
The strike was prompted by the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000 and reverse the electricity tariff hike to N65/kWh.
NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to pass a new National Minimum Wage Act. The government’s offer of N60,000 was rejected by the Labour Unions, leading to the breakdown of negotiations last Tuesday.
