Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a departure from the party’s founding principles as the reason for his decision.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku conveyed his resignation with immediate effect. The letter, which has now surfaced in public, outlines his reasons and reflects a sense of disappointment and regret.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities the PDP gave him, particularly highlighting his tenure as Vice President of Nigeria for two full terms and his two-time candidacy for the presidency under the party’s platform. He described those periods as “significant chapters” of his life.
Atiku, a founding member of the PDP, lamented that the party has taken a trajectory that he believes diverges from the foundational principles it once upheld. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he said.
The letter, which was acknowledged and stamped “Received” on the same date, was signed by HammanDama Abubakar on behalf of the party ward office.
Atiku concluded his resignation letter by wishing the party and its leadership the best in the future, appreciating the support and opportunities he had received over the years.
This development marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially as the nation inches closer to the 2027 general elections. Atiku’s next political move remains to be seen.
