The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood prediction alert, warning that several locations across 16 states in Nigeria are at risk of flooding due to heavy rainfall between 16th and 20th July 2025. The alert, which came from the National Flood Early Warning Center (FEWS Center) of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, is aimed at informing relevant stakeholders and the general public to take precautionary measures.
According to the flood forecast, the affected areas include Mubi in Adamawa State; Edor, Upenekang, Oron, and Eket in Akwa Ibom; Ngala and Maiduguri in Borno; as well as multiple communities in Bauchi State such as Azare, Bauchi, Itas, Jama’are, Kafin-Madaki, Jama’a, Kari, and Misau.
In Plateau State, flood-prone areas listed include Jos, Bukuru, and Mangu, while Jakusko, Machina, and Dapchi in Yobe State are also under threat. Daura in Katsina State and several communities in Kano State including Kunchi, Kano city, Gezawa, Wudil, Bebeji, Sumaila, and Tudun Wada were named as areas of concern.
The flood alert also affects Jigawa State, with Miga, Gwaram, Diginsa, Ringim, and Dutse flagged. In the South-South region, Calabar and Akpap in Cross River State were listed. Bungudu and Gusau in Zamfara State are also expected to be impacted.
The Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, signed the alert on behalf of the ministry. He urged all relevant stakeholders, including state governments and local authorities, to take proactive steps to prevent loss of lives and property. The ministry also encouraged feedback and collaboration from stakeholders to improve its flood response strategy.
This warning underscores the importance of timely disaster preparedness and coordinated emergency responses, particularly as climate-related risks continue to escalate across Nigeria.
