The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Usmanu Danfodiyo University has expressed its disapproval of the federal government’s decision to advertise the position of Vice Chancellor of the university and other senior officers while the governing council is absent.
In a joint statement by ASUU’s chairman, Muhammad Almustapha, and secretary, Shuaibu Sodiku, it was highlighted that this advertisement goes against the university statutes regarding the appointment process of a new Vice Chancellor. ASUU raised concerns about the fairness, integrity, and legality of these proceedings.
ASUU has called upon President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Education, and other key stakeholders to take immediate and necessary action to reconstitute the Governing Councils of public universities. They emphasized that this step is crucial for the universities to operate legally and smoothly, in accordance with the provisions of the law.
In otherwords, ASUU has urged these authorities to launch investigations into any violations of the law that have occurred in recent actions taken by various universities in the absence of the governing council. They emphasized the importance of upholding the autonomy and independence of universities by adhering to established procedures and safeguarding their integrity.
