In the wake of a tragic incident where a student was beaten to death by his peers, Ajayi Crowther University has announced a new policy of mandatory drug testing for all students, porters, and security personnel.
According to a report from the university’s alumni executive, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Adebayo, revealed this decision during a meeting with the alumni group. The move comes after the death of a 200-level Mechanical Engineering student, Akpo Alex, who was allegedly beaten by some of his colleagues over the theft of a mobile phone.
In addition to the drug testing, the university has taken several other measures to address the situation. All individuals involved in the incident, including the suspected perpetrators, a porter, and two security personnel accused of rape, are currently in police custody awaiting legal proceedings.
The university has also increased its security presence on campus, with civil defense officers working alongside existing security personnel to ensure the safety of the student body.
The parents of the deceased student visited the university and suggested ways to raise awareness among students about proper channels for reporting incidents, rather than resorting to violence.
The alumni executive expressed its commitment to working closely with the university management to uphold the institution’s vision and ensure the safety of students.
The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged that the university has learned from this tragic event and has implemented measures to improve security and encourage students to report any concerning incidents to the administration.
