The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has officially signed a renegotiated agreement with the Federal Government, marking a significant step toward improving conditions in Nigeria’s polytechnic sector.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday at the Conference Room of the National Universities Commission in Abuja. ASUP President, Comrade Shammah S. Kpanja, signed on behalf of the union, while Dr. Mamud Yayale Ahmed, Chairman of the Federal Government’s Renegotiation Committee, signed on behalf of the government. The agreement is set to take effect from January 1, 2026.
Speaking shortly after the signing, Comrade Kpanja expressed appreciation to the union’s leadership and members for their resilience and unwavering support throughout the negotiation process. He specifically acknowledged the contributions of the Council of National Officers and the National Executive Council in ensuring a successful outcome.
The development is expected to strengthen industrial harmony within the polytechnic system and address long-standing concerns of academic staff. Stakeholders believe the agreement will also enhance the quality of education and institutional stability across polytechnics in the country.
The statement was signed by Comrade Kehinde Tajudeen Oladipupo, National Publicity Secretary of ASUP.
