In a rousing speech, Okewole Samuel Oluwaseun, a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Ayede in Oyo State, addressed the nation on the occasion of Nigeria’s 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic rule.
“Fellow Nigerians, today we gather to celebrate a remarkable milestone in our nation’s history – 25 years of uninterrupted democratic process,” Okewole began. He reflected on the country’s turbulent past, recalling “the dark days of military rule, the pain of political instability, and the uncertainty of our nation’s future.”
Okewole paid tribute to the “sacrifices of our heroes past, who fought tirelessly for the democracy we enjoy today.” However, he acknowledged that significant challenges remain, including security threats, food crises, and welfare concerns that require urgent government attention.
The lecturer emphasized that national development is a collective responsibility. “We must all contribute our skills, talents, and resources to build a better Nigeria,” he said, calling for unity and a “culture of peace and understanding” among all Nigerians.
Okewole specifically urged the government to prioritize the swift approval and implementation of the new minimum wage to alleviate the suffering of workers. He also demanded the implementation of developmental agendas to stimulate economic growth and improve the standard of living for all citizens.
Quoting the third stanza of the national anthem, Okewole expressed the hope that “with peace and plenty Nigeria may be blessed.” He called for a Nigeria “where every citizen has access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities” and where “our diversity is celebrated, and our unity is strengthened.”
Concluding his speech, Okewole declared, “Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Long live democracy!” His impassioned words resonated with the nation as it reflects on its democratic journey and looks to the future with renewed determination.
