Two National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were injured after a bathroom wall of a female hostel collapsed at the NYSC orientation camp in Ise-Emure, Ekiti State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday as the corps members were preparing for their morning baths. The victims were quickly rescued from the rubble and rushed to the camp’s clinic for medical treatment.
In a statement on social media, the NYSC said the situation is now under control and the “first responders effectively attended to the corp members.”
NYSC spokesman Eddy Megwa confirmed that the injured corps members are in stable condition and receiving treatment at a tertiary health facility in the state.
“The strong collaboration of the entire camp officials that served as first responders to the two injured Corps Members from the incident were effectively coordinated by the State Coordinator,” Megwa said.
NYSC Director-General YD Ahmed called on the Ekiti State government to “urgently equip the camp with sustainable facilities” to prevent such occurrences in the future. Under the NYSC Act, state governments are responsible for building and maintaining orientation camp facilities.
The corps members are currently undergoing the compulsory three-week orientation exercise at the camp.
