A 45-year-old man from Izzi LGA of Ebonyi State, Dr. Enyi Paul Onyebuchi, has sparked widespread reactions after it was revealed that, despite holding a Ph.D. in Mathematics, he still works as a cleaner at Ebonyi State University. Many Ebonyians have condemned the situation, calling for urgent intervention.
In an interview, Dr. Onyebuchi shared his journey, explaining that he joined the university as a cleaner in 2007 with only an SSCE. Over the years, he pursued further studies with the institution’s approval, earning a first degree, an M.Sc., and finally a Ph.D. in 2022. However, despite multiple applications and the submission of his original certificates, his efforts to be converted to an academic position have been unsuccessful.
We wrote the conversion exam, but the process was manipulated. They claimed some of us failed, yet when dignitaries intervened and requested the answer scripts, they refused to provide them. It became a political game, he lamented.
Dr. Onyebuchi urged the Ebonyi State Government and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene, emphasizing that his Ph.D. should not go to waste. I was recommended for conversion by my Head of Department, but when it reached the Vice Chancellor’s office, it was ignored. I have submitted all my original certificates, including my Ph.D., yet nothing has changed.
Despite his frustration, he remains hopeful but pragmatic. If the government decides to place me where I belong, that’s good. If not, I wont kill myself ”I will continue to hustle.
Reacting to the issue, the Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi State University, Mr. Patrick Itumo, expressed surprise, stating that the university recently concluded the conversion process. He was unsure whether Dr. Onyebuchi applied or why he was not selected.
If he has grievances, let him write to the Vice Chancellor or Registrar. He can also visit our office ”I am willing to look into the matter, Mr. Itumo stated.
Dr. Onyebuchi now awaits a resolution, hoping that justice will prevail.
