The Ekiti State House of Assembly has confirmed the appointment of Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye as the substantive Chief Judge of the state.
The confirmation followed a unanimous vote by lawmakers after deliberating on the request sent by Governor Biodun Oyebanji for the screening and confirmation of the Acting Chief Judge. Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, read the governor’s letter on the floor of the House before the confirmation proceedings commenced.
Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters, Hon. Babatunde Oke, presented the committee’s report on the nominee, which was subsequently debated and adopted at the Committee of the Whole.
Majority Leader, Hon. Tolu Ige, and Minority Leader, Hon. Oladele Ogunsakin (whose position was read by the Speaker), both expressed confidence in Justice Ogunmoye’s capacity to lead the state judiciary. They described him as eminently qualified and well-suited for the exalted role, adding that Governor Oyebanji had made the right decision in his nomination.
Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987 and began his career in the Ondo State Civil Service. He had been serving as the Acting Chief Judge of Ekiti State since the passing of Justice Ayodeji Adeyeye in November 2024.
Speaking to journalists after his confirmation, Justice Ogunmoye pledged to embrace technology as a key driver for judicial reforms in the state. He assured the public of prompt and transparent dispensation of justice under his leadership.
“We will leverage technology to improve efficiency and ensure quick, fair justice delivery. Our judiciary must serve the people with integrity and commitment,” he said.
Meanwhile, under a matter of urgent public importance, Hon. Tolulope Ige raised concerns over the artificial increase in fuel prices across Ekiti State. He noted that the hike was not in line with the official depot prices.
Hon. Tope Longe and Hon. Lateef Akanle condemned the actions of some petroleum dealers, describing them as exploitative and harmful to the people of the state.
In response, the Speaker directed the Chairmen of the Joint House Committees on Security and Special Duties (Hon. Babatunde Omotayo), and Trade and Investment (Hon. Tope Longe), to engage petroleum marketers in the state and report their findings to the House within two weeks.
