In a significant development for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, the former Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Tunji Odeyemi, has accepted the offer to become the next state party chairman. This decision came after a delegation from the Ekiti South Senatorial District made a passionate plea to Odeyemi at his country home in Ode Ekiti.
The delegation, led by prominent party leaders such as Hon. Dele Ajibola, Hon. Wole Adedara, and the former Ekiti South Senatorial Chairman, Olotu Shagari, conveyed the district’s desire for Odeyemi to take up the party chairmanship position. They emphasized that Odeyemi’s leadership would be crucial in the party’s quest to regain control of the Ekiti State Government House in the 2026 gubernatorial election.
In his response, Odeyemi acknowledged the calls from various party leaders over the past few weeks and stated that he had been considering the offer. “Whatever my people say is what I will do. This is my base, and I have never taken any decision without their consent. I can assure you, I don’t have a choice but to take your offer,” Odeyemi said.
The former governor further requested an urgent meeting with the PDP leadership to discuss the details and secure his commitment to the position. “I will now send you back to Ekiti PDP leaders you mentioned right here that sent you to me, and you should arrange an urgent physical meeting for us to meet so that we can meet, and I will ask them a few questions in order to secure me,” Odeyemi added.
The delegation, which included prominent party members such as Hon. Bade Adara, Hon. Ajayi Israel, and Hon. Ajulo Ayodele, expressed their satisfaction with Odeyemi’s decision and pledged to facilitate the requested meeting as soon as possible.
This development comes at a crucial time for the PDP in Ekiti State, as the party aims to regain its foothold in the state after a series of electoral setbacks. Odeyemi’s acceptance of the party chairmanship offer is seen as a significant step towards the party’s preparations for the 2026 gubernatorial election.
