The Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Congress has been postponed indefinitely, according to sources within the party. The postponement, which also affected congresses in Ogun, Taraba, and Kano states, does not appear to be related to former governor Ayo Fayose.
In a statement, a former PDP state assembly member under the Fayose administration, Dr. Samuel Omotoso, provided some insights into the postponement. He noted that the lesson from this is that “ordinary chiefs should not act as kings,” citing issues with the State Working Committee (SWC) reportedly behaving in an “oppressive and dictatorial” manner.
Omotoso expressed optimism that a new date will be announced by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) soon, and that the congress will proceed as planned. He called for unity, suggesting the formation of a coalition among different groups within the party to design an acceptable template for the state congress.
The former lawmaker also welcomed the “soon to be former state SWC” to the “back row,” indicating a shift in power dynamics within the party. He expressed confidence that the Ekiti PDP will eventually go into the congress with a “coalition of the willing,” emphasizing the importance of discipline for the party’s resurgence.
The indefinite postponement of the Ekiti PDP congress seems to be a result of internal party dynamics, rather than being directly linked to the former governor. The party leadership is now focused on finding a resolution and uniting the various factions ahead of the rescheduled event.
