In a special state address, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and order during the planned nationwide protests scheduled for August 1st.
Governor Oyebanji acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to freedom of expression and peaceful protest. However, he expressed concerns about the potential for violence and disruption to the state’s economic activities.
“Whereas, our Constitution grants all citizens the right to freedom of expression, including the right to air their views freely, it is therefore expected that a protest will be conducted under a peaceful atmosphere without recourse to any violent disturbances to other citizens who also enjoy their inalienable right to unhindered movement and life,” the governor stated.
Recalling the destruction caused during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, Governor Oyebanji warned against a repeat of such incidents, which he said had a devastating impact on the state’s economy and infrastructure. He cited the destruction of government buildings, private businesses, and strategic food storage facilities as examples of the damage caused.
The governor emphasized the state government’s efforts to address the current economic challenges, including measures to support farmers, improve food production and distribution, and provide welfare assistance to citizens. He appealed to parents, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to discourage the youth from participating in any violent protests.
“I therefore want to appeal to our people not to fall into the agenda of those who might just be interested in wreaking havoc while pretending to be fighting for the interest of the ordinary people,” the governor said.
Governor Oyebanji assured the people of Ekiti State that the security agencies would be on high alert to maintain law and order during the planned protests. He vowed that the government would not allow anyone to disrupt the peace and progress of the state.
The special state address comes amid growing concerns about the potential for nationwide protests in response to the country’s economic challenges, including high inflation and the rising cost of living.
