The Federal Government has commenced the long-awaited payment of wage award arrears to federal workers across the country. This payment is part of the ₦35,000 monthly wage award earlier promised to civil servants as a palliative to cushion the effects of recent economic reforms.
According to a statement from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), the disbursement began on Monday, May 26, 2025. Several workers have already received their payments, while others are expected to be credited in the coming days. The arrears cover a five-month period.
The wage award was introduced by the government in 2023 following the removal of fuel subsidy and other economic policies that affected workers’ purchasing power. It was designed to provide temporary financial relief to federal employees while discussions on a new minimum wage continue.
Director of Press and Public Relations at the OAGF, Bawa Mokwa, confirmed that the payments are ongoing. He also addressed recent media claims that the wage award was excluded from the 2025 budget, clarifying that the Accountant General, Mr. Babatunde Ogunjimi, never made such a statement.
Mokwa assured workers that the Federal Government remains committed to fulfilling its financial obligations and improving the welfare of its workforce. He emphasized that all eligible workers will receive their full entitlements without delays.
Federal workers are advised to monitor their salary accounts and promptly report any issues or discrepancies to the appropriate authorities. The government has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in the payment process.
