The Federal Government on Thursday officially closed its case against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in the ongoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Kanu, who is facing charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony, was present in court as the prosecution concluded its presentation of witnesses and evidence before Justice Binta Nyako.
The case, which has attracted both national and international attention, resumed with the government calling its final witness before informing the court of its decision to close its case.
Following the development, Kanu’s legal team is expected to open the defence at the next adjourned date. Details of the prosecution’s evidence remain under wraps as proceedings in the trial have been partly held in camera for security reasons.
Justice Nyako subsequently adjourned the matter to a later date for the defence to begin presenting its case.
The trial of the IPOB leader has continued to generate public debate, with supporters demanding his release while the government maintains that the charges against him are a matter of national security.
