The Nigerian Federal Government has responded to the need for continued celebration and observance of Eid-El-Fitr by extending the public holiday until Thursday, April 11, 2024. This decision comes after the initial declaration of Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, the Honourable Minister of Interior.
The extension of the holiday was prompted by the Sultan of Sokoto’s announcement that Wednesday would be Eid-el-Fitri, as the confirmation of the moon sighting was still pending. Dr. Ojo, while extending warm congratulations to the Muslim community for completing their month-long spiritual journey, emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to establishing a safe and prosperous Nigeria where all citizens can thrive.
Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, issued a statement underlining that the additional public holiday presents an opportunity for individuals and families across the country to observe and celebrate the joyous occasion of Eid-El-Fitr in unity and harmony.
By extending the public holiday, the government acknowledges the importance of Eid-El-Fitr and demonstrates its dedication to accommodating the religious practices of all citizens. It is hoped that this extra day off will enable Nigerians to fully participate in the festivities and celebrations associated with this significant religious event.
