The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on Sunday, July 13.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. This comes as part of the seven-day national mourning period earlier announced by the President to pay tribute to the late statesman.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the public holiday as a mark of respect for Buhari’s legacy, leadership, and his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister said.
He urged Nigerians to use the holiday as a time for reflection, emphasizing peace, patriotism, and national unity, which were values the late President strongly championed during his time in office.
The Federal Government also reminded citizens that national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, from Sunday, July 13 to Saturday, July 19, 2025.
Condolences have poured in from across the nation and the international community, with tributes recognizing Buhari’s role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape and governance.
The government extended heartfelt sympathies to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
