A fire outbreak on Thursday afternoon gutted parts of the Northwest University’s City Campus in Kano, destroying several offices and causing panic among students and staff. The fire, which started on the ninth floor of the Ado Bayero House, primarily affected the offices of the Head of Department and lecturers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department.
Emergency responders from the Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service arrived promptly, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical spark may have triggered the blaze.
During the incident, a security guard trained in firefighting suffered from smoke inhalation while trying to control the flames. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.
Vice-Chancellor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa assured the university community that while the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, academic activities will resume as soon as possible. He also emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols, including ensuring that all electrical appliances are switched off at the end of the day to prevent such incidents in the future.
The university management has pledged to work with relevant authorities to restore normalcy and enhance fire prevention measures on campus.
