Nigerian Activist Rejects New National Anthem

On Friday, prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu publicly rejected the newly adopted national anthem, choosing to sit during its recitation at a recent event.

Yesufu shared a video of her protest on her X (Twitter) account, captioning it with the hashtag “#NotMyNationalAnthem”.

Yesufu’s actions come after President Bola Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law earlier this year. The new law reinstates the old anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”, replacing the previous national anthem.

By refusing to stand and recite the new anthem, Yesufu has made a bold statement, signaling her disapproval of the government’s decision to change the long-standing national song. Her protest highlights the ongoing debate and division surrounding this national symbol.

As a respected civic leader, Yesufu’s stance is likely to resonate with many Nigerians who share her perspective.

The controversy surrounding the national anthem change demonstrates the complexity of navigating national identity and unity, particularly in a country as diverse as Nigeria.
