Nigerian Government Urged to Acquire New Aircraft for Presidential Use

The Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence has called on the federal government to promptly acquire new aircraft for the exclusive use of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

In a report following a hearing by the committee’s technical subcommittee, legislators expressed concerns about the condition and safety of aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF). The report highlighted the substantial expenses associated with maintaining President Tinubu’s 19-year-old plane, leading to extended grounding periods and increased operational costs for the fleet.

“The Committee is of the strong and informed opinion that considering the fragile structure of the Nigerian federation and recognising the dire consequences of any foreseen or unforeseen mishap that may arise as a result of technical/operational inadequacy of the Presidential Air Fleet, it is in the best interest of the country to procure two additional aircraft as recommended,” the report stated.

The legislators emphasized the need to ensure the safety and reliability of air travel for the Nigerian president and vice president, given the country’s complex political and security landscape. They argued that acquiring new aircraft would enhance the operational capabilities of the PAF and mitigate the risks associated with the aging fleet.

The report has been submitted to the federal government, and the Nigerian authorities are expected to consider the Committee’s recommendations in the coming weeks. The potential procurement of new aircraft for the exclusive use of the president and vice president has sparked discussions among political analysts and the general public regarding the allocation of government resources and the prioritization of national security concerns.
