Speaking at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conference, Comrade Adebayo Suleiman, a key labour leader, highlighted several pressing challenges facing Nigerian workers. He pointed to soaring inflation, the free-fall of the Naira, and the ineffective rollout of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) policy as major setbacks impacting workers’ livelihoods.
While welcoming the wage increase, the NLC warned that without strong economic reforms, the benefits may be short-lived. It called on the government to take urgent action to stabilise the Naira, combat inflation, overhaul the CNG programme, and implement targeted subsidies for essential goods.
Additionally, the labour union emphasized the importance of investing in local production to reduce Nigeria’s heavy dependence on imports and stimulate sustainable growth.
In response, the International Labour Organisation reaffirmed its support for constructive dialogue between the government and labour unions, aiming to build long-term solutions for economic resilience.
As the nation grapples with these challenges, the NLC reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government to ensure lasting improvements in the living standards of Nigerian workers.
