Owoade Crowned New Alaafin of Oyo, Ushering in a New Era of Leadership

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83, after a 52-year reign.

Following his demise, the process to select a new Alaafin encountered delays and legal challenges. Nine royal families sought inclusion in the selection process, advocating for a transparent and equitable approach.

On January 10, 2025, Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade was announced as the new Alaafin of Oyo. His appointment was approved by Governor Seyi Makinde, following recommendations from the Oyomesi, the traditional council responsible for selecting the Alaafin. The state government expressed hope that his reign would bring peace, prosperity, and unity to the Oyo Kingdom.

The Alaafin of Oyo is a paramount traditional ruler in Yorubaland, with the position deeply rooted in the history and culture of the Yoruba people. The recent appointment of Prince Owoade marks the beginning of a new chapter in the leadership of the Oyo Kingdom.
