In a recent interaction on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) Space, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), dismissed rumors of his intention to leave the party ahead of the 2027 general election. There were speculations that Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, was considering joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP) due to the ongoing crisis within the LP.
During the conversation hosted by Parallel Facts, Obi affirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and categorically stated that he would never engage in activities that would undermine the party. He emphasized, “I am still a member of the Labour Party, and I don’t and will never engage in anti-party activities.”
In his Statement,Obi expressed support for the establishment of a structure for his followers called the “Obidient” movement. He explained that forming blocs and participating in the political process is a common practice worldwide.
The Labour Party has faced internal turmoil recently, with many of its supporters demanding a thorough restructuring of the party in preparation for the 2027 elections.
Regarding his absence from the party’s national convention in Anambra State, Obi revealed that he chose not to attend because the party leadership, led by Julius Abure, failed to consult with key party stakeholders before organizing the event. He emphasized the importance of taking the necessary steps to salvage the party, stating that his passion lies in building a new Nigeria rather than solely focusing on rebuilding the Labour Party.
