In a major shake-up within Nigeria’s military hierarchy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of new Service Chiefs as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s security architecture and enhance operational efficiency within the Armed Forces.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, the President appointed General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.
Also appointed are Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as the new Chief of Naval Staff.
Meanwhile, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence, continuing in his strategic role within the nation’s security establishment.
President Tinubu, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, expressed deep appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their selfless service, patriotic dedication, and contributions to national security during their tenure.
The President urged the newly appointed military leaders to build on the achievements of their predecessors, emphasizing the need for enhanced professionalism, discipline, and unity within the ranks of the Armed Forces.
“The newly appointed Service Chiefs must justify the confidence reposed in them by working tirelessly to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our nation,” the statement quoted the President as saying.
The appointments, according to the Presidency, take immediate effect.
This development marks the second major overhaul of Nigeria’s military leadership under President Tinubu’s administration, signaling a renewed commitment to addressing the country’s evolving security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and maritime threats.
