The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) is grappling with controversy following allegations of sexual harassment leveled against its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi S. Fasina, by Engr. Mrs. Folashade Adebayo, a Deputy Director of Works at the university. The accusations, amplified by audio recordings shared on social media and online platforms such as the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) and Sahara Reporters, have cast a shadow over the institution’s reputation.
In response, the university’s Governing Council convened an emergency meeting on Friday, January 24, 2025, where it decided to excuse the Vice-Chancellor from the proceedings to ensure an impartial investigation. A nine-member committee has been established to delve into the matter, with a three-week deadline to deliver its findings.
The committee’s terms of reference include investigating the origins of the viral audio recordings, the motives behind them, and the means by which they gained traction on social media. Additionally, the committee will examine the allegations of immoral conduct, the alleged purchase of key administrative positions, and prior actions taken by the police and university authorities to address the claims.
The Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Muftau A. Ibrahim, emphasized the university’s commitment to justice, assuring stakeholders that no sacred cows would be spared in the pursuit of truth. “The Council encourages members of the university community and the general public to remain calm and focused as the Council is determined to do justice,” Ibrahim stated.
The council aims to review the committee’s findings at its next meeting, scheduled for the third week of February 2025. Meanwhile, FUOYE remains under public scrutiny as it seeks to address these serious allegations and preserve its integrity as an academic institution.
