In a move to address the ongoing tensions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the appointment of 555 individuals to serve as Chairpersons and members of the governing councils of various tertiary institutions across the country.
This decision comes after ASUU had threatened to embark on a strike action over the government’s previous failure to reconstitute the governing councils of public universities. ASUU had given the government a two-week ultimatum to rectify the issue.
According to a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, the appointed Chairpersons and members will be officially inaugurated and attend a retreat on Thursday, May 30th, and Friday, May 31st, 2024, at the National Universities Commission in Abuja.
This development is seen as a significant step by the Federal Government to address the concerns raised by ASUU and to facilitate the smooth functioning of the country’s tertiary education system.
