The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to establish 18 innovation hubs across various tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The initiative aims to foster research, technological advancement, and entrepreneurship among students and academics.
TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, disclosed this during a recent event, emphasizing that the hubs will serve as centers for cutting-edge research and innovation. According to him, the project aligns with the federal governments agenda to strengthen Nigeria’s knowledge economy and promote homegrown solutions to national challenges.
The innovation hubs will focus on diverse fields, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, agriculture, and digital technology. Echono noted that by providing state-of-the-art facilities and support for research, TETFund hopes to bridge the gap between academia and industry, encouraging the commercialization of research outputs.
The establishment of these hubs comes as part of broader efforts to reposition Nigeria’s tertiary education sector for global competitiveness. Institutions selected for the initiative are expected to play a crucial role in developing innovative solutions that will drive economic growth and national development.
The move has been widely praised by education stakeholders, who believe it will enhance practical learning, improve employability, and position Nigerian universities and polytechnics as key players in global innovation.
