In an official statement released by President Bola Tinubu’s office, it has been announced that Dr. Abdullahi Bello has been appointed as the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau. However, his appointment is still pending confirmation by the Senate.
Dr. Bello will be taking over from Prof Isah Mohammed, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2018.
Described as a highly experienced professional, Dr. Bello brings with him over 25 years of work experience in various fields such as consulting, banking, law enforcement, financial services, and academia.
The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) was established in 1979 when the Constitution provided a list of Codes of Conduct for public officers. However, its legal mandate was granted in 1989 under the Babangida regime.
The Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, Chapter 58 LFN 1990 empowers the Bureau to receive asset declarations from public officers, examine the declarations, retain custody of them, and make them available for inspection by any Nigerian citizen, as prescribed by the National Assembly.
President Tinubu expects that once confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Bello will lead the Bureau with utmost integrity and work towards fulfilling its mandate of upholding high standards of public morality in government affairs.
The new Chairman’s responsibilities will include ensuring that the actions and conduct of public officers adhere to the highest standards of morality and accountability.
