The Delta State Police Command has demoted two police officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside a police station, following an orderly room trial.

The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, attached to the ‘C’ Division in Asaba, were captured in a viral video on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station premises.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the disciplinary panel, which found both officers guilty of Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion, and Discreditable Conduct in violation of the Police Act, 2020.

As part of the disciplinary measures, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was demoted to Constable.

The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s, zero-tolerance stance on extortion and other forms of professional misconduct within the Nigeria Police Force.

He stressed that the use of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals and other electronic payment platforms in police stations and formations remains strictly prohibited, warning that no police officer is permitted to demand or receive money from members of the public under any circumstance.

CP Oyeniyi said any officer found engaging in such unethical practices would face appropriate disciplinary action, adding that the Command remains committed to promoting discipline, accountability and professionalism.

He urged officers and men of the Command to uphold the highest standards of integrity while respecting the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties.

The Commissioner also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit, assuring residents that all complaints would receive prompt attention.

The disciplinary action is expected to serve as a strong warning to officers across the Command and reinforce ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to restore public confidence through accountability and ethical policing.
