Several persons have been reportedly injured following a ghastly road accident along the ever-busy Ilawe–Ado Ekiti road in Ekiti State.
The accident, which occurred on Thursday, was said to have been caused by a brake failure involving a commercial vehicle conveying passengers from Ilawe Ekiti towards Ado-Ekiti.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle after the brake system failed, leading to a crash that left multiple occupants with varying degrees of injuries. The incident caused panic among commuters and residents in the area, as bystanders rushed to rescue victims from the wreckage.
Some of the injured passengers were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, while others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The Ilawe–Ado road is known to be a major route linking several communities within the state, and has witnessed a number of accidents in the past due to heavy usage and occasional mechanical failures.
Officials of relevant emergency agencies were said to have arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to manage traffic and ensure prompt evacuation of victims.
As of the time of filing this report, no fatalities had been officially confirmed, while authorities are yet to release a full statement on the cause and number of casualties involved.
Residents have, however, called on drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance, especially brake systems, to prevent avoidable tragedies on the road.
