The Ekiti State House of Assembly, at its plenary sitting held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, deliberated on a number of significant bills aimed at strengthening governance, promoting innovation, and aligning state laws with federal standards.
Among the bills considered was the Prohibition of Unguarded Grazing of Cattle and Other Ruminants in Ekiti State (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2025, which successfully passed through its first reading. The proposed law seeks to reinforce regulations governing livestock management and ensure peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.
Also receiving first reading was the Ekiti State Startup Bill, 2025, designed to foster a conducive environment for technology-enabled startups. The bill aims to position Ekiti as a hub for digital innovation and entrepreneurship in Nigeria, providing frameworks for startup funding, mentorship, and infrastructure development.
The 2025 Supplementary Appropriation Bill also scaled its first reading. According to the House, the supplementary budget is a strategic financial plan intended to build upon the state’s initial 2025 “Budget of Sustainable Impact,” ensuring the continuation of priority projects and effective service delivery.
In addition, the Ekiti State College of Technology, Ijero Ekiti Bill, 2025, passed through its second reading after robust debate by members. The bill, which seeks to upgrade the College of Health, Science and Technology, Ijero Ekiti, to a Polytechnic status, was referred to the House Committee on Education for further legislative scrutiny.
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Electoral (First Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (First Amendment) Bill, 2025, were both scrutinized by the Committee of the Whole House and subsequently passed into law. The two amendments now await the Governor’s assent.
According to the Assembly, the amendments aim to ensure conformity with the Electoral Act and the latest Supreme Court decisions on electoral matters.
