The Women Initiative for Advocacy, Social Justice and Empowerment (WIASE) has called for the immediate suspension of Senate President Godswill Akpabio following the controversial removal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate chamber.
The group condemned the action as a serious violation of democratic principles and gender equality, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for women in Nigerian politics.
The incident occurred during a plenary session on February 20, 2025, when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan protested the unauthorized reassignment of her seat.
Citing Order 10 of the Senate Standing Rules, which protects the rights and privileges of senators, she attempted to address the issue.
However, instead of allowing her to speak, Senate President Akpabio ordered security personnel to eject her from the chamber.
The decision sparked immediate outrage, with WIASE describing it as an abuse of power and an attempt to silence women in leadership.
The group stated that this is not just about a seat but about fairness, respect, and the fundamental rights of women in governance.
WIASE also recalled a July 2024 incident, in which Akpabio made a sexist remark toward Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, suggesting that the Senate was not a night club when she spoke without formal recognition.
The organization argues that these repeated acts of discrimination only reinforce gender bias in Nigerian politics, where women currently hold just a small percentage of Senate seats.
The group is demanding the immediate suspension of Senate President Akpabio for his actions against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
It is also calling for a formal apology to the senator and all Nigerian women for the violation of her rights.
WIASE is further urging a review of Senate rules and procedures to prevent future incidents of discrimination and ensure fairness in governance.
The removal of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has triggered widespread condemnation from civil society groups, political analysts, and human rights advocates, who argue that such actions undermine democracy and discourage women from participating in leadership.
With growing pressure on the Senate to address the controversy, many are watching to see whether justice will be served or if the institution will continue to allow the silencing of female voices in governance.
