Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar led a delegation of prominent political figures to visit ex-President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna State. The visit, described by Atiku as post-Sallah homage, included notable personalities such as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam, former Adamawa State Governor Jibrilla Bindow, and former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi.
Atiku shared details of the visit on his social media platforms, expressing that he had a wonderful time with the former president, who was in his usual humorous element. He noted that Buhari’s jokes were so engaging that they left him with aching ribs from laughter.Â
While the visit was officially framed as a festive courtesy, it has sparked speculation about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Reports suggest that Atiku, El-Rufai, and Labour Party leader Peter Obi are in discussions to form a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu. This development follows recent statements from political figures like Adewale Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Buba Galadima of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), indicating possible shifts in party affiliations and strategies.
The visit to Buhari’s residence comes shortly after members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Progressive Governors Forum paid their own Sallah homage to the former president earlier in the week. Buhari, who reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC during that visit, remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
