Hon. Benjamin Obaseki, the brother of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, has resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In his resignation letter to the Oredo local government chairman of the party, Obaseki cited the party’s internal turmoil and a disconnect between the leadership and its members as the reasons for his decision.
“I am convinced it is time for me to leave for my growth as the leadership of the party has lost touch with its members and hence become insensitive to my plight,” Obaseki wrote in the letter. He pointed fingers at the top brass of the party, including his own brother, the governor.
Obaseki’s resignation comes as a blow to the PDP in Edo State, as the governor’s brother was seen as a prominent figure within the party’s structure. The move is also likely to heighten the ongoing political tensions within the state.
The PDP in Edo has been embroiled in internal power struggles, with factions loyal to the governor and those opposed to his leadership vying for control of the party machinery. Obaseki’s resignation is seen as a further indication of the growing discord within the party at the state level.
Political analysts suggest that Obaseki’s departure from the PDP could potentially open the door for him to explore other political options, including the possibility of joining a rival party. However, the governor himself has not yet made any public statement regarding his brother’s resignation.
The development is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Edo State as the 2024 general elections draw closer. Stakeholders will be closely watching how the PDP responds to this latest setback and whether it will be able to resolve its internal crisis and present a united front to the electorate.
