In Ado EkitIi, Ekiti State, a 25-year-old man named Olamide Oni has been remanded in prison for the alleged abduction and rape of a 15-year-old girl.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Raymond Osas, the defendant is suspected of committing these offenses against the minor between January 13 and May 10, 2024, within the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District. The alleged crimes are said to be contrary to Sections 276 and 265(2) of the 2021 Criminal Law.
In her statement to the police, the victim claimed that the defendant invited her from Ado Ekiti to Ibadan, Oyo State. She stated they initially stayed together at a guest house in Ibadan and later in Lagos between January and May.
The victim said, “When I could not cope with the situation anymore because he was having sexual intercourse with me every day from January to May, I gave my parents’ phone number to somebody to help me call my parents. They later came to Lagos to arrest the defendant and brought me back to Ado Ekiti.”
Inspector Osas informed the court that the duplicate case file has been sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. He urged the court to remand the defendant at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti pending the issuance of the legal advice.
Although the charge was read and explained to the defendant, the court did not take his plea.
Magistrate Olu Bamidele, in his ruling, ordered the defendant to be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti for 30 days, pending the issuance of legal advice by the DPP. The case was adjourned until June 20, 2024 for mention.
