The Federal Government has terminated the 98-kilometre Oyo-Ogbomoso road contract previously awarded to Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) due to significant delays in its completion. Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced this decision during a stakeholders meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, emphasizing the governments commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges promptly.
Umahi expressed concern over the prolonged hardship faced by commuters and the negative impact on economic activities resulting from the projects delay. He assured attendees that the contract would be re-awarded to a more efficient contractor to expedite completion. The Oyo-Ogbomoso road project has dragged on for too long, Umahi stated. We cannot continue to watch as businesses and means of livelihoods suffer due to its non-completion. The Federal Government will take decisive action to ensure the project is completed without further delay.
Stakeholders at the meeting, facilitated by Akin Alabi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency, criticized RCC for the delays and urged the government to expedite the rehabilitation of other federal roads in Oyo State and the Southwest region.
In a related development, the Federal Government has announced plans to rehabilitate an 18-kilometre section of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway using reinforced concrete pavement. Minister Umahi disclosed this during a tour to assess the roads condition and ongoing rehabilitation efforts. He noted that the 78-kilometre expressway, initially awarded to Julius Berger Plc eight years ago, had faced numerous challenges, with only one carriageway completed. The government is now committed to completing the project to improve connectivity and economic activities in the region.
These initiatives underscore the Federal Governments dedication to enhancing Nigerias infrastructure, aiming to alleviate commuter hardships and boost economic growth through improved road networks.
