The Federal Government has announced an upward review of allowances for civil servants as part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare and strengthen efficiency in the nation’s public service.
The development was disclosed by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, during a media briefing held in Abuja on Friday.
She said the newly approved allowances cover officers on the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) as well as those under the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).
According to her, the decision was reached following growing concerns over the economic realities facing workers and the need to ensure that civil servants remain motivated in carrying out their responsibilities.
Walson-Jack revealed that one of the major approvals includes a 100 per cent Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for civil servants attending training programmes at recognised institutions.
She explained that affected workers would now receive full allowances during official training exercises, describing the move as part of broader reforms targeted at improving service delivery across government establishments.
The Head of Service also noted that the government reviewed other welfare-related benefits, including estacode and book allowances, alongside additional official entitlements available to workers in the federal civil service.
She said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to building a more productive and efficient civil service through policies that directly impact workers’ welfare.
Walson-Jack further disclosed that the Federal Executive Council had previously approved an enhanced retirement package for treasury-funded civil servants under the contributory pension scheme.
She described the approval as a major intervention designed to improve life after retirement for public servants.
The latest announcement comes at a time when many Nigerian workers continue to battle rising inflation and increasing living costs, with labour groups repeatedly calling for better remuneration and improved welfare packages.
The government believes the new measures will boost morale among workers while enhancing productivity in the civil service.
