In a concerning development, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has received information about a significant prison break that occurred on July 11th, 2024 at the Koutoukale prison in Niger Republic. According to the NIS circular, hundreds of terrorist kingpins, criminals, and drug traffickers managed to escape during the incident.
The NIS has immediately instructed all Comptrollers of Commands and Officers in Charge of Formations along the Nigeria-Niger border to be on high alert. There is a strong possibility that some of these escaped prisoners may attempt to sneak into Nigeria to join other terrorist groups and continue their criminal activities.
The Ag. Deputy Comptroller General of the Border Management Directorate, MC DIKE, has directed all officers working on the Nigerian side of the border with Niger to increase their vigilance and collaborate with other security agencies to track down and arrest any of the fleeing suspects.
The NIS has emphasized the critical nature of this situation and has called for strict compliance with the directive to prevent these dangerous individuals from entering Nigeria and causing further mayhem and menace. The service has also distributed the circular to various Comptrollers and Commanders across the different zones and border formations.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by the region and the need for heightened cooperation and coordination between the Nigerian authorities and their counterparts in neighboring countries to address the threat of transnational crime and terrorism.
