A last-ditch effort by the National Assembly to prevent an indefinite nationwide strike scheduled to begin tomorrow, Monday, June 3, has ended in failure.
The National Assembly had convened a mediation meeting aimed at resolving the ongoing impasse between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). However, the meeting, which was held earlier this evening, concluded without an agreement being reached.
The looming strike action was called by the major labour unions in response to the government’s failure to address longstanding grievances over issues such as wages, working conditions, and social welfare programs. Despite the National Assembly’s intervention, the two sides were unable to find a compromise, raising the likelihood of widespread disruptions across the country starting tomorrow.
With the mediation efforts having fallen through, all eyes will now be on how the Federal Government and labour leaders proceed in the coming days to avert the potentially crippling nationwide strike.
The stakes are high for both sides as they try to find a solution before the planned action commences.
