Students in Ekiti State, under the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee (JCC), staged a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti against the recent tariff hikes by MTN. The demonstration was in line with directives from the NANS Southwest Zonal Leadership and aimed at addressing the economic hardship caused by the increased telecom charges.
The protest, which drew students from various higher institutions in the state, was led by the NANS Coordinator, Owolewa. During the demonstration, he engaged with MTN officials, urging them to relay the students concerns to MTN headquarters and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a tariff review.
Security personnel, including officers from the Ekiti State Police Command, were on the ground to ensure the protest remained peaceful. The Commissioner of Police and other security agencies provided full support, ensuring there were no disruptions.
The NANS Coordinator commended the leadership of NANS JCC Ekiti for organizing the protest effectively. He also expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their cooperation in maintaining order throughout the demonstration.
The protest was widely recognized as a demonstration of students collective voice against economic policies affecting their access to essential communication services.
