President Bola Tinubu directed a complete and comprehensive review of the recently announced governing boards for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions before the planned inauguration and retreat.
The Federal Ministry of Education had recently released the names of nominees for the positions of chairpersons, Pro-Chancellors, and members of the boards and councils overseeing universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. An inauguration and retreat for these nominees was scheduled for May 31st.
However, the public response indicated that the nominations did not adequately reflect the federal character of the country. Some states received only a single nomination, while others received multiple appointments.
In ordering the review, President Tinubu acknowledged the widespread feedback from across the nation. He is committed to ensuring strict compliance with the constitutional principle of federal character, which guarantees the fair and equitable representation of all parts of the country.
The review will re-examine the list of governing council members to ensure a proper national spread, so that every region of Nigeria is adequately represented.
