Showdown Looms as Sowore Vows Continuation of Protests Defying Tinubu’s Call for Suspension

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Nigeria’s 2023 election, has announced that the “End Bad Governance” protests will resume across Nigeria on Monday, August 5th. The demonstrations, which began on August 1st, have been driven by public frustration over the country’s economic hardships and spiraling inflation.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sowore urged protesters to first gather at the Ojota area of Lagos before marching to the Alausa secretariat, the seat of the Lagos state government. He listed several other gathering points across the city, including the Lekki Toll Gate, LASU Gate, and FESTAC Town.

The protests have turned violent in some northern states, with security forces using tear gas to disperse crowds. In Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Kaduna, there have also been clashes between protesters and the authorities.

On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation, calling on the demonstrators to suspend their activities. He promised that the efforts of his administration “will soon be visible and concrete for everyone to see, feel, and enjoy.”

However, Sowore’s message indicates the protests will continue, as the demonstrators maintain their demands for better governance and economic relief. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold as Nigerians take to the streets again on Monday.
