The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced a national peaceful protest rally to be held on Thursday, July 18th, 2024.
According to a circular issued by the JAC, the protest rally is being organized to demand the payment of four months’ withheld salaries and address other grievances of their members in the universities and inter-university centers.
The convergence point for the protest is scheduled for 7:00 AM at the Unity Fountain, behind the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. The JAC has encouraged all NASU and SSANU branches to participate in this “important national assignment”, with branches outside the Abuja environs expected to arrive on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 in preparation for the event.
“All branches of NASU and SSANU are encouraged to participate in this important national assignment and each branch is free to come in numbers as many as their financial strength can carry,” the circular stated.
The JAC has also informed that the route of the protest will be announced before the take-off at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
Prince Peters-Adeyemi, the General Secretary of NASU, and Comrade Mohammed H. Ibrahim, the President of SSANU, have signed the circular, urging members to participate actively in the “MEGA peaceful protest rally”.
This protest rally comes amidst the ongoing industrial actions by the non-academic staff unions in the Nigerian university system, demanding the payment of their withheld salaries and addressing other pressing issues affecting their members.
