Aston Villa is deeply saddened to report the passing of former goalkeeper Matija Šarkić.
Šarkić joined the Aston Villa Academy in 2015 and spent five years with the club, during which time he made his full international debut for Montenegro.
“The thoughts and condolences of all at the club are with Matija’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time,” said an Aston Villa spokesperson. “He was a talented young player who was highly regarded during his time at the club, and his loss is deeply felt by the Aston Villa community.”
Šarkić, who was 27 years old, departed Aston Villa in the summer of 2020 to continue his professional career elsewhere. No further details about the circumstances of his passing have been provided.
The Villa family will come together to honor Matija’s memory and support his loved ones through this difficult time. He will be deeply missed.
