A cholera outbreak in Lagos State, Nigeria has resulted in 24 deaths and 417 suspected cases across 20 local government areas, according to the latest situation report from the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi.
The outbreak, which began in early June, has seen a peak in cases in several local government areas including Ajeromi, Kosofe, Epe, Ikorodu, Alimosho, and Eti-Osa on June 10th, 2024.
In addition to the 24 reported deaths, there are currently 35 confirmed cholera cases in the state. The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, had previously reported 21 deaths and 401 suspected cases earlier this week.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Abayomi, has urged residents to strictly adhere to personal and environmental hygiene practices to help curb the spread of the outbreak. He emphasized the importance of staying safe and avoiding potential risk of infection.
Health authorities in Lagos are working to contain the cholera outbreak, which is a major public health concern in the densely populated commercial capital of Nigeria. Efforts are underway to provide treatment, improve sanitation, and raise awareness among the local population.
