The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) chapter, has rejected the appointment of Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, a Kano politician, to the Governing Council of the university.
In a statement, the Chairperson of ASUU BUK, Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, stated that the process leading to the appointment of politicians to the Governing Council contravened the laws guiding such appointments. Suraj emphasized that the criteria for such appointments clearly favor technocrats and academics.
“We are dissatisfied with the federal government’s decision to appoint hardcore politicians to the Governing Council,” Suraj said while addressing newsmen. “This is a violation of the rule of law and the established procedures for such appointments.”
Suraj also criticized the dismissal of the previous Council, which had a constitutional mandate of four years, after only one year in office. He compared the situation to sacking a state governor after just one year in office and labeled it as a violation of the rule of law.
The ASUU BUK Chairperson urged the federal government to reinstate the Senator Udo Udoma-led Governing Council to complete their term.
Earlier, Suraj led a peaceful protest on Friday, demanding the federal government pay their entitlements and implement the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement. This action was in compliance with a directive from the national body for all branches to organize protests within their campuses.
