Federal Ministry of Education Raises Concerns over Proposed Same-Sex Marriage Debate

The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has expressed serious concerns over a proposal by the Creative Africa Initiative to hold a national debate on the topic “Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized in Nigeria.”

In a letter to the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, described the proposed debate topic as being “against the cultural and religious values of the majority of Nigerians” and also “contravenes existing Nigerian laws.”

The Permanent Secretary warned that this initiative could “cause widespread confusion and potentially incite unrest within the country.” He emphasized that introducing such a sensitive topic into public discourse, especially through a formal debate, could have “far-reaching consequences that could disrupt public peace and social cohesion.”

The letter stated that the debate could be seen as “a deliberate attempt to undermine the laws of Nigeria and destabilize societal norms, thereby causing unnecessary tension and division among the populace.”

In light of these concerns, the Federal Ministry of Education has requested the DSS to investigate the origin and intentions behind the letter from the Creative Africa Initiative.

The Permanent Secretary stressed the importance of ensuring that such activities with the potential to incite discord are “thoroughly scrutinized and addressed appropriately” to safeguard the peace and stability of the nation.
