In a recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hinted that he may lend his support to Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate, in the 2027 presidential election.
This statement came after a private meeting between Atiku and the former governor of Anambra State in Abuja, which fueled speculations about a potential alliance among opposition parties to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku, who is currently engaged in merger discussions with stakeholders from various opposition parties, stated that he would be willing to back Obi as the presidential candidate if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decides to zone the ticket to the South or South-East specifically.
He said, “If the party decides that it’s the turn of the South-East and Peter Obi is chosen, I won’t hesitate to support him.”
This announcement marks a significant shift in the political landscape, as the former vice president, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the PDP, is now hinting at a potential alliance with his Labour Party counterpart.
The move is seen as a strategic effort to consolidate the opposition’s chances of unseating the ruling party in the 2027 elections.
