The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s substantive National Secretary. The announcement was made on Monday by the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, following the NEC meeting held at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.
According to Damagum, the confirmation of Senator Anyanwu puts to rest any lingering disputes or confusion surrounding the secretary position. He emphasized that the NEC’s decision is final and binding, bringing internal disagreements to a close.
The meeting, which gathered top party officials and stakeholders, also addressed broader concerns about the unity and future of the PDP. In a statement made after the session, the party leadership reiterated its position that the PDP remains united, without any factions, camps, or unauthorized coalitions operating outside its structure.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, dismissed recent speculations about internal crises, defections, and secret political alliances. He reaffirmed the party’s cohesion and commitment to strengthening its position as a major opposition force.
“Despite earlier internal disagreements, the party has resolved its issues through the efforts of the National Working Committee (NWC). Public quarrels and confusing press statements have stopped, and we are moving forward with a shared purpose,” Mohammed stated.
He also commended the Board of Trustees, PDP members in the National Assembly, and state-level leaders for maintaining stability, particularly at the grassroots. He praised state chairmen for managing party affairs effectively despite financial constraints.
Reacting to recent media claims of mass defections from the party, Mohammed described them as deliberate attempts to weaken public confidence in the PDP. He stressed that such reports do not reflect the true state of the party, which remains strong and unified.
“There is no need for side meetings or external coalitions,” he said. “The National Working Committee now enjoys the full support of party leaders at all levels. Our governors and key stakeholders are working together to strengthen the PDP for the future.”
With the confirmation of Senator Anyanwu and renewed assurances of unity, the PDP appears set to focus on rebuilding and repositioning itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
