Soun appoints interim Imam, clears air on Ayilara’s status

The recent installation of Sheikh Habeeb Ayilara as the new Chief Imam by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, has sparked controversy regarding the status of the incumbent Chief Imam, Sheikh Teliat Yunus Olusina Ayilara.

Installation Ceremony Details

Sheikh Habeeb Ayilara was officially turbaned in a ceremony attended by prominent Muslim leaders and dignitaries at the Abata section of the palace. However, the Parakoyi of Ogbomosoland, Alhaji Sirajudeen Aleem, clarified that the new Imam will only serve as the Chief Imam of the palace until the resolution of a court case involving the current Chief Imam.

Emphasis on Religious Harmony

During the ceremony, Oba Ghandi emphasized the importance of religious harmony, noting that the throne of Soun is deeply rooted in traditional religion. He urged against treating the matter as a religious conflict, stating:

“The throne is that of the traditionalists. Soun Ogunlola, who founded the throne, was a pure traditionalist; he worshiped the Ogun deity. Christians and Muslims are merely guests here, and we should promote religious harmony.”

Oba Ghandi also addressed the ongoing court case, asserting that despite the legal dispute, he has chosen not to remove Sheikh Teliat from his position. He stated:

“You can’t take me to court and still lead me in prayer. Such a prayer cannot be answered. If I were to take a church member to court, I wouldn’t expect them to lead in prayer.”

Historical Context and Future Plans

The monarch highlighted the significance of the day, marking his birthday and the historical nature of the event. He noted that thorough research was conducted before appointing the new Imam to avoid past mistakes.

> “Today’s event is not the end; it is just a stop along the journey. We are still on our way to our destination.”

The new Chief Imam was later presented with the Staff and Certificate of Office by the Asoju Muslumi of Ogbomosoland, Alhaji Mikahel Misasco

As the situation unfolds, the Ogbomoso community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that fosters unity among its diverse religious groups. The emphasis on religious harmony and respect for traditions remains paramount as both the new and incumbent Imams navigate their roles amid ongoing tensions.
